My country is evil. This past year proved it.
Remember this anti-masking incident? Ahh, memory lane. Everything—from the t-shirt to the perturbedness to the fact that the dude lived in Florida—seemed so perfectly…American. In that ’80s T&A flick Porky’s kind of way.
The American Right’s passive-aggressiveness is nothing new. They’ve been in a snit for years now. But this year brought a tragic twist to their abuse of privilege: they decided it would be cute to pretend that they didn’t understand how viruses spread from one person to another. Passive-aggressiveness got weaponized. It got weaponized and used by racists against the rest of America.
And now, it’s the Holiday Season and the families and friends of 350,000 Americans are grieving. The demographic differences need to be pointed out, too. Black and Hispanic folks died at 2.8 times the rate of whites from Covid-19. Native Americans died at 2.6 times the rate of whites from Covid-19.
Guess what? The anti-maskers love this news.
They also love hearing that Covid-19 has stressed medical staff to the breaking point. Besides people with different skin colors, MAGAts hate smart people.
They love Donald Trump because he enables their racism and stupidity. Their lives are simple: they let rich white men disrespect them, and they get to disrespect some “other”—whether the “other” has to do with a person’s skin color, religion, sexual orientation, gender.
The words of President Lyndon Baines Johnson: “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”
